What is Match Cut?

Match cut is commonly used to create a sense of continuity and connection. It does this by using similar shapes, sounds, outlines or actions to cut from one imagine to another. This is usually done in film and TV editing in order to show continuity between two scenes; comparing subtext of one shot to another, visually signalling that two images are related or to pass time.

What are the different types of Match Cuts?

There are three main types of Match Cuts which rely on different components;

  1. The most popular one is to match images. This is the cut between to similar shape, outline or figure showing that the two objects are related. It can also be used to represent passage of time or to create a continuity and meaningful focus for the scene.

  2. The match on action cut created a connection between similar movements between two scenes. This is done to emphasize action and reaction of a certain action.

  3. Matching sounds, also known as sound bridge, matches sound effects on both sides of a transition between two scenes. This creates a unique connection, which may be done by voiceover, music, or a constant sound.

How to use a match cut effectively?

There are a few steps to make Match Cut effectively, these are:

  • Research – learn from the filmmakers you admire the most, write down your ideas and storyboard and allow their methods to inspire your own technique.

  • Consider themes, symbolism and metaphors – the aim of match cuts is in order to show the audience connections which they may have not made on their own. This can be done for example by giving a sentimental meaning to an object.

  • Consider continuity and momentum – Match Cut can be used in order to tell a narrative throughout a story, this will take the audience on a journey about whatever the story is you telling.

  • Enjoy – it is always good to experiment with different ideas and find your own technique. Let your imagination lead and enjoy the process
