This should be pretty simple. Right? I mean everyone with a basic education should be able to write a blog post. After all, it’s all just putting pen to paper – or more appropriately stabbing away at the keyboard or keypad – and then publishing (posting) the final work on a blog.
Blogging has come a long way since the mid-1990s when it began. There’s an agreement by most experts that the first blog was created in 1994 by Justin Hall. A student at that time, Hall had created Links.net as a place to publish his writings. Others blogs soon appeared. At the time, the sites were not referred to as blogs. They were called Online Diaries or Personal Pages.
To describe these sites, Jorn Barger of the influential Robot Wisdom blog coined the term, weblog in 1997. Today, blogging is not so much an exclusive preserve of programmers and techies. Various blogs abound on as varied a subject one can think of from fashion and style to food, sports, entertainment, automobile, you name it.
Okay, enough of the history lesson. How do write a blog post? As mentioned earlier, it should be a walk in the park, once you can write. Well, it may not entirely be as easy as that. You see, while the writing – rattling on the keypad – may be easy, the success of the blog will depend on a couple of factors. I mean, what the use of having blog posts that nobody reads? You get it?
So, to write a blog post that catches the attention of your audience, you must incorporate four key elements into your work. These are
(1): a clear subject,
(2): a great headline,
(3): a hook, and
(4): a solution.
The first step in writing a blog post is having a well-defined subject, one which you are knowledgeable and passionate about. People listen when they are persuaded that you have something to say. In other words, your passion and expertise in the subject you’re writing on will bring and keep your audience.
A great headline is next and a must, if you want to capture people. If they are well optimized for search engines, they will attract attention and generate hits.
The next thing is a great hook. Think of it this way: your headline is the bait that hides a hook which once a fish takes a bite at, gets stuck in the throat and they can’t escape or get away. You certainly want your audience hooked on you. You don’t want them to nibble at the bait and escape. Good writers set the premise of the post crisply with a hook that promises the readers more.
Finally, have a solution or resolution. Once you establish a clear subject, you must offer you distinct resolution, or clear views on the subject. If you had raised questions or identified problems, you should provide solutions.
These four elements are very important when writing a blog post. After incorporating these elements, carefully proofread your work before publishing. You may get someone to help with proofreading, because many times, we often miss the little “printer’s devils” and you don’t want your writing filled with those annoying thing that could easily have been avoided.
Once that is done, publish and promote your blog post.
